It is not just Amsterdam where bikes rule the roads. The Netherlands boasts 22,000 miles of cycle paths.
There are designated bike paths throughout Amsterdam that make it very safe for cyclists. So safe are the network of cycling paths that even the elderly and children (and pets) ride without hesitation.
In 2006, there were about one million bikes in Amsterdam. 60% of trips are made on bike.
