"The Inner Light" in Rouen, France

Rouen, France was our other surprise stop and what an incredible visit it was.
The artist Claude Monet is one of it's famous sons.  He painted over 30 paintings of the Notre-Dame de Rouen Cathedral.

This is the view of this imposing cathedral from the Palace de la Cathedrale.

This Rouen cathedral keeps the record of being the tallest cathedral in France. The spire reaches 151 meters high!
There has been a cathedral here since the 11th century.

Impressive gargoyles looking down on us from high above.

We came in the side entrance which is incredible decorated.  Including France's patron saint, St. Denis who was martyred in Normandy and lost his head.  His statue is often seen with him holding his head in his hands.  Yikes.

The final resting place of Richard the Lionheart.  Considered a hero in his day.  He was King Richard I of England from 1189-1199.  You might know him from the 'Robin Hood' movies.

The view of the Nave.

Never does a photo do justice to the artwork and detail of a stained glass window in these century/millennium old cathedrals.  I take the photo anyways to give you a taste.

In June of 1944, during the week before D-Day, this church was hit by 7 bombs by the Allies.  One landed in the choir and never exploded.  The other 6 severe damaged the church.
