Who knew that Canterbury had canals like Venice? I didn't.
Slowly drifting through the old buildings and bridges.....it is marvellous.
Even though Deb is wearing the Wales golf shirt, this fellow is going to let us ride on the canals.
It was gorgeous the day we arrived. Maybe a little nip in the air, but sunny and lovely.
Dennis, Lyn, Roger and Ruth waiting to climb aboard our gondola.
This very old apparatus is called The Canterbury Ducking Stool. It is a remnant from the Medieval times when they used it for punishment, crimes, and most infamously to test women for witchery.
They would tie her to the chair and then submerge her in the water for 2-3 minutes.
If she survived, then she was deemed a witch and burnt at the stake.
If she drowned, her family would receive a letter of apology from the Church that a mistake was made but they would give her a Christian burial and her soul would be with God.
Thus were the phrase came from...."Damned if you do, damned if you don't."
Stunning views of the gardens through brick openings.
All aboard....
Our guide sure looked like Prince William.
Den and Lyn enjoying the charming ride.
Fun opening views from under the tunnels.
A statue in a museum court yard.
Students sketching the canals and surrounding buildings.
A competitor dressed for the part.
Get ready...we are going to duck under the bridge.....seriously....we are.
Keep ducking....
Don't touch anything he says?
What...you just touched the underside?
Don't lift your head.....
I can see the opening...we are almost there. Did I mention I am afraid of the dark? lol
Rush hour on the canal.
There is the fellow we pay for the delightful tour. And if we don't......the chair is waiting to duck us in the water. Yikes.
